Ohio Department of Public Safety Unveils New Website

Wednesday, the Ohio Department of Public Safety's (ODPS) Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) unveiled a web site designed to provide statistics based on crime data gathered using the Ohio Incident Based Reporting System (OIBRS). OIBRS is modeled after the FBI's National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and is a voluntary crime-reporting program in which Ohio law enforcement agencies submit crime statistics directly to the state and federal government.

The web site provides users with access to OIBRS crime data on specific violent and property crimes occurring in Ohio that has been categorized by law enforcement jurisdiction, year and crime type. Approximately 550 agencies covering about 74 percent of the Ohio population have reported crimes that occurred in 2009 and/or 2010.

The OIBRS website is located at:

Criminal statistics can be useful tools for law enforcement to combat crime. However, these statistics can also encourage stereotyping and, sometimes, profiling of certain individuals that happen to belong to a particular class or group of people.
