Ohio State Highway Patrol Seizes $78,000 In Stolen Merchandise

Yesterday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that troopers seized several garbage bags full of stolen brand name clothing, valued at approximately $78,000, during a traffic stop in Trumbull County, Ohio.
On the morning of January 16, 2012, troopers pulled over a rented van for a traffic violation on Interstate 80 and a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed bags of stolen clothing from retailers Hollister, Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic, Guess, Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Express.
Troopers then arrested Javier Yanes-Orellana, 36, Carmen Sanchez-Drag, 33, Jesus Fabian, 29, and Maria Fiorenttini, all residents of New Jersey. All four were charged with felonies of Receiving Stolen Property and Possession of Criminal Tools.
Section 2913.51 of the Ohio Revised Code, entitled “Receiving Stolen Property,” provides:
No person shall receive, retain, or dispose of property of another knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the property has been obtained through commission of a theft offense.
Receiving Stolen Property is a felony of the fourth degree, carrying a maximum prison sentence of eighteen months in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Section 2923.24 of the Ohio Revised Code, entitled, “Possessing Criminal Tools,” provides:
No person shall possess or have under the person’s control any substance, device, instrument, or article, with purpose to use it criminally.
Possession of Criminal tools is a felony of the fifth degree, carrying a maximum prison sentence of twelve months and a $2,500 fine.
